Amphorae made their appearance in Italy with the arrival of the Greeks and were the first true containers for fermented grape juice. The use of amphorae was then widely diffused throughout Italy by the Etruscans. The close relationship between wine and terracotta is embodied in the extraordinary thermal insulation capacity of Impruneta terracotta, due to its special and famous physico-chemical characteristics, which allows for perfect preservation of wine.
